RISC OS 5 pictured running on ARM Cortex-A8 kit Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip. The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers. 75 comments, latest by rjek on 30/4/09 3:15PM. ARM-powered computer firm in RISC OS port talks US-based company Genesi, which builds ARM Cortex-powered appliances that could be compatible with the RISC OS Open Beagleboard work, is said to be in talks with RISC OS companies over a possible port of the OS to its products. It's hoped ROS 5 could be made to run on the lightweight EFIKA MX Open Client, which sports a 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor, 3D graphics hardware, 512M RAM, wifi networking and more. Genesi analyst Matt Sealey said: "RISC OS is really popular in the UK and the last dedicated RISC OS box - the Iyonix - has been discontinued for six months. We are currently questioning the relevant companies in the UK, including [ROS 5 owners] Castle, about collaboration and marketing efforts, and the support they'd need to make it a reality." The EFIKA MX Open Client costs about 160 quid in real money. 71 comments, latest by rjek on 7/9/09 9:03PM. Published: 30 Aug 2009
ARM in half of all netbooks by 2012, says analyst Linux Today reports that an industry analyst reckons that ARM chips will surpass Intel's Atom chips in 55 percent of netbooks by 2012 - however, another analyst suggests ARM will only get 10 to 20 percent. 1 comment, latest by torbenm on 23/3/09 3:16PM. Should ROL concentrate on a new ARM port of the OS? Should RISCOS Ltd focus on porting its OS to new ARM-powered devices, such as the recently unveiled prototyped netbooks, following work on bringing the RISC OS Open flavour of the OS to the ARM Cortex-A8 platform? 22 comments, latest by rjek on 28/3/09 8:25PM. ARM shows off prototype netbooks A number of RISC OS users have called for a port of their favourite operating system to the range of ARM-powered netbooks unveiled last week. It is understood at least one of the devices features a processor compatible with the ARM Cortex-A8, for which a RISC OS port is being brewed over at RISC OS Open. 6 comments, latest by tinopeners on 18/3/09 11:52AM. Work starts on a RISC OS 5 ARM Cortex port An attempt to port RISC OS Open's flavour of RISC OS 5 to the Pandora, a 450MHz ARM Cortex-A8-powered ultra-portable net book, is underway, according to programmer Jeffrey Lee. 26 comments, latest by Stoppers on 2/2/09 8:04AM. Published: 22 Jan 2009
A guide to overclocking Kinetic and StrongARM CPU cards Charlie Lane has compiled a package of notes and photos on overclocking various StrongARM processer cards, including Castle Kinetics, for RiscPCs. Overclocking is the process of ramping up the digital timing signals of the computer to force the processor to work faster. Charlie told us: "I thought it would be fun to investigate the possibilities of speeding up my Kinetic RiscPC - only to find suitable information on Kinetic cards was rather hard to come by so I set about working it out for myself." Note: Follow the instructions entirely at your own risk. 9 comments, latest by rjek on 20/1/09 4:23PM. Published: 6 Jan 2009
The ARM Club disbands after 18 years The ARM Club, which has organised shows and provided support and products to RISC OS users since 1990, has closed its doors and stopped publishing its Eureka magazine. Its committee members agreed to stop taking on new club members after membership figures went into free fall and no one was willing to help run the organisation. Archive has agreed to take on Eureka subscribers and their first issue, edition 21:11, is due to arrive in the post by Monday. 4 comments, latest by bucksboy on 9/12/08 6:32PM. Published: 6 Dec 2008
Experimental RISC OS emulation layer for ARM-powered devices Programmer David Given has started work on a miniature reimplementation of the RISC OS kernel and plugged an ARM emulator into it to allow simple RISC OS programs to run on Unix-like operating systems. His work includes modules taken from the RISC OS Open sources. Meanwhile, another coder has spoken of writing a similar emulation layer for Intel-powered PCs - although he wouldn't be the first to attempt such a project. 10 comments, latest by lym on 25/11/08 11:15AM. ARM processors to power cute netbooks As so many of you have pointed out, a number of little notebook computers, which are all the rage these days, are to be powered by ARM chips, paving the way for a possible RISC OS port to such slimline devices (especially given the recent Ubuntu Linux on ARM announcement) - however there are countless ARM Linux-powered systems available already and yet there's no sign of any RISC OS port for them either... Prototype Acorn Unix-powered A680 lands on eBay A rare Acorn A680 running an ARM port of BSD 4.3 has hit online auction site eBay with a minimum opening bid of 100 quid. According to the seller, believed to be ROL's Paul Middleton, there are only a half a dozen of these pre-production systems left in existence. The A680 was developed by Acorn for Olivetti in 1988, and features an ARM2, 8MB of RAM, a 66MB hard drive and an early version of Acorn 4.3 BSD Unix kernel in ROM. 13 comments, latest by diomus on 25/8/09 12:09AM. RISC OS 5 port hopes for netbook now in production The new Touch Book netbook, which uses the Beagleboard ARM-powered hardware, could run RISC OS 5 thanks to efforts to port the RISC OS Open flavour of the OS to the ARM Cortex processor family. The tiny netbook is available now to buy, and Bryan Hogan has offered to test the OS port on his Touch Book. Click here here for more potential products that have a realistic chance of running RISC OS 5. 40 comments, latest by Pete on 1/9/09 9:10AM. Published: 26 Jul 2009

South West 2009 show report Martin Hansen describes his time as both a punter and an exhibitor at this year's annual RISC OS event held in the south west of the UK. While there were no major announcements ahead of the show, the otherwise friendly and mildly busy atmosphere was coloured by Friday's tragic loss of Paul Vigay. 3 comments, latest by mosschoppers on 1/3/09 8:15PM.
